As travel advisors, we know planning a trip is about much more than just booking flights and hotels, it's about crafting an unforgettable experience that meets our clients' deepest desires. This personal connection is what sets us apart from online booking platforms. Once we understand our clients' passions, we can elevate their trips with hidden gems. For instance, a client I booked on a recent safari trip revealed her love for giraffes, elephants and painting, so I booked a visit to a giraffe sanctuary in Kenya, and an elephant art experience in Zimbabwe. She was beyond thrilled and has since referred friends and booked additional trips, simply trusting "I know what she wants." This personalized approach set me apart as a trusted travel advisor and added additional income, as she added another country to her trip.

Every client is unique, and while not every conversation reveals such personal details, those that do offer a chance to create extraordinary, tailor-made experiences. This personal touch not only results in lifelong clients but also provides opportunities to upsell by using hidden gems to transform ordinary trips into magical adventures. Asking open-ended questions to uncover their motivations, interests and expectations lays the foundation for a personalized travel plan. By investing the time in understanding your clients' aspirations and desires, you create tailored travel experiences that exceed expectations. This enhances both our clients’ experiences and increases our revenue.

There's something magical about uncovering hidden gems and as the trend of seeking out these treasures grows; travelers are increasingly looking to us as travel advisors to guide them to these secret wonders. By leveraging hidden gems, we can craft personalized journeys that ensure delightful surprises, lasting memories and great reviews!

Understanding Your Client On a Human Level

Before suggesting a destination, you need to understand your client on a personal level. What's their idea of a perfect trip? What experience would they consider extraordinary to share post-trip? Are they seeking healing through restful retreats, quality time with family or the thrill of solo discovery? This initial connection is crucial. I usually start by asking them to define their idea of a successful trip and inquire if this trip has different goals than usual. For example, an adventurous client requesting a healing retreat might need solace after a divorce, loss of a loved one or when recovering from an illness. Understanding these motivations helps you suggest the right experience and add real value. Clients might seek different experiences to “shake things up” in their lives, from discovery and adventure to cultural immersion. Open-ended questions uncover their motivations, interests and expectations, laying the foundation for an extraordinary travel plan.

Making Personalized Recommendations

Once you have a clear picture of what your client wants to achieve with their trip, it's time to curate experiences that align with their interests. Whether it's a hidden beach in Croatia known only to locals, or a tucked-away vineyard tour in Sicily, these personalized recommendations show that you've listened and understood their desires. This is where your expertise and insider knowledge shines, as each suggestion should feel handpicked just for your clients. Even when the client doesn’t have the budget for adding on expensive excursions, there is always a hidden gem or experience that we can add to take their trip to the next level. Suggesting a much-loved local restaurant that we know is the kind of experience our clients will love, will add value and reflect in their review, and whether they refer you to their friends.

Leveraging Your Local Knowledge

Leveraging your local knowledge and industry connections to uncover hidden gems that aren't easily found in guidebooks or online platforms is where the magic truly happens. Seamlessly integrate these unique experiences into the client's itinerary, ensuring they enhance rather than complicate the journey.

  • Highlight the Value:Emphasize the unique memories, authentic interactions and deeper connections hidden gems offer. Upselling isn’t about increasing costs; it’s about enriching the travel experience. Clearly outline the benefits - for example, upgrading to a suite could mean breathtaking views, exclusive amenities and added comfort.
  • Create Tempting Packages:Bundle experiences to add value. Suggest pairing a special dining experience with a private culinary tour or bundling adventure activities like hiking, wildlife safaris and hot air balloon rides. When booking an adventure-packed African safari, recommend ending with a few relaxing days on an island, such as an exciting safari in Tanzania paired with the stunning Zanzibar Island, or combining a South African safari with a trip to Cape Town and including a few private tours.
  • Tap into FOMO: Highlight exclusive or rare experiences that add a unique touch to the trip as emphasizing exclusivity can be very appealing.
  • Tell a Story:Paint a vivid picture of what the upsell will add to their experience. Explain how these additions can create cherished memories and offer something truly special, ensuring your clients have an exceptional experience while also increasing your revenue.

The Impact of Hidden Gems On Travel Experiences

Hidden gems transform ordinary trips into exceptional adventures. They enable clients to connect deeply with their destinations, engage authentically with local communities and walk away with stories that are theirs alone. When a small group approached me for a trip to Sicily and told me they were all wine afficionados, I contacted a local winery I had a connection with to set up a fabulous tour with delicious wine tastings and an added experience with a local chef which included a chef-led shopping trip to the local markets and a private cooking lesson. They absolutely loved it and already requested another tour next year.

Transforming Travels With Your Travel Agency

In a world where travelers crave authenticity and unique experiences, incorporating hidden gems into travel itineraries stands out as a game-changer. By understanding your clients on a personal level and curating bespoke experiences, you elevate their journeys beyond the ordinary, ensuring every trip is an exceptional adventure.

Maintain Transparency, so that your clients know exactly what they’re paying for and why it adds value to their trip. Transparency builds trust and reduces buyer's remorse. Remember, the best upsell enhances the client's experience without making it feel like an unnecessary expense and shows that you care about their journey and are committed to making it the best it can be.
