From keeping them happy and entertained to remembering to pack the necessities and making it through TSA, traveling with little ones can be intimidating. And while taking to the skies with toddlers and young children can be an adventure in and of itself, families shouldn’t let these stressors prevent them from traveling. Here are nine helpful tips to guide families through the flying process from start to finish.

Before the Trip

Set Them Up for Success

Tell children what to expect before taking off. In addition to having a conversation with your child, there are tons of kid-friendly videos on YouTube that explain flying and visiting the airport in a way that’s easy for youngsters to understand and digest.

Book Early Flights

Book early morning departures when possible to improve your chances of staying on schedule. Not only are these flights less likely to be delayed during takeoff and landing, but early travel days ensure everyone’s a little sleepy, making it easier for kiddos to nap on the plane.

Stroller Swaps

Consider swapping out your day-to-day stroller with an umbrella stroller or travel stroller as they are much more compact. Speaking of, be sure to check your stroller at the gate so the crew can have it ready to go and waiting for you when you arrive at your destination.

Pack Smart

Every traveler knows the challenge of striking the perfect balance when packing. And unfortunately, getting it right can be even less straightforward with little ones in tow. While every family is different, a few things are worthy of making the packing list including snacks and food, comfort items like a favorite stuffed animal or blanket, electronic devices (with headphones) and personal hygiene items like sanitizer, wipes, diapers and pull-ups.

At the Airport

Choose Travel-Ready Outfits

Layers, layers, layers; whether you’re traveling from a cold to hot climate or if your kiddo is sensitive to changes in temperature, dressing in layers can help to alleviate this major stressor. Speaking of what to wear, opt for slip on shoes for the whole family to avoid any hold ups at TSA. And don’t forget, some items like snacks, liquids and electronics need to be removed while going through security so make sure they’re easy to access.

Stock Up on Necessities

We’ve all been there, you packed your carry on at the last second and forgot the essentials — chargers, snacks, water. Make a pitstop at one of the many terminal shops to stock up on necessities before takeoff with one of the most important being water as staying hydrated is key, no matter your age.

Take a Bathroom Break Before Boarding

Between taxing and turbulence, bathroom access is never a certainty while in the air. Keep preventable potty problems at bay by making sure everyone uses the bathroom 15 minutes before boarding.

On the Plane

Keep Them Occupied

Encourage kiddos to pack their carry on with items that will keep them busy for the duration of the flight. From toys and games to books and snacks, a strategically packed carry on can be the different between “I’m bored” and happy silence.

Prepare for Ear Pressure

Unfortunately, babies and toddlers often suffer from uncomfortable ear pressure during takeoff and landing. Luckily, there are a variety of ways to remedy this including drinking from a bottle, breastfeeding and using a pacifier. Parents should note this phenomena can be worse for children who recently suffered an ear infection or a cold and, in these cases, it’s recommended to seek approval from a doctor before taking to the skies.
