There must be a reason there are so many songs about islands, but what’s the draw really? Why do so many travelers prefer to enjoy an island getaway as opposed to, for instance, a beach vacation? I did some research, and this is what I found: travelers love the privacy and the feeling of seclusion, the small communities, friendly locals who appreciate the income from tourism and love to welcome visitors. Travelers also love having the ability to explore an entire island in a few days or even just one as they take in the soothing scenery and calming natural beauty that are common to places surrounded by water.
I’ve found that this is a biggie for me … going to sleep with the soothing ebb and flow of the ocean and waves crashing on the shore then, waking up to that breathtaking view of white sand and stunningly blue water. I love having my first cup of coffee as the sunrise warms my face, or a glass of champagne with a late breakfast right on the beach, under a palm tree, with only the sounds of the ocean. It’s priceless. During my first island experience, I was mesmerized by the unbelievably white sand of Zanzibar. Whenever I go to Africa on safari, l like to spend a few days either in Zanzibar, the Seychelles or Mauritius on my way back.
Every part of the world has stunning islands to explore so how does one choose where to go? Will it be a romance travel adventure? Or a solo trip for those travelers who just want to recharge and get away from the “noise” of everyday life? If traveling with kids, one might choose an island where there are many activities for families to enjoy together such as Hawaii. Although stunningly beautiful, Hawaii has often been described as too expensive and overcrowded, yet those islands are always a huge attraction. Others prefer islands are somewhat underdeveloped to avoid crowds.
An Island Vacation For Any Occasion
There are some destinations that literally “scream” romance, and I found that when couples are making plans for a romantic getaway, island destinations such as the Maldives, Santorini, the Seychelles, Bali, Turks and Caicos, Bora Bora, Zanzibar and many others, are first on their wish list.
Even for those not booking a romantic getaway, an island experience is a unique and peaceful retreat surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the ocean. It's a place where the pace of life slows down, and the natural beauty takes center stage. The sound of waves gently crashing against the shore, the rustle of palm trees swaying in the breeze and the chirping of exotic birds create a symphony that soothes the soul. Add to that sunbathing on pristine beaches, snorkeling and scuba diving in turquoise waters teeming with colorful marine life and vibrant coral reefs, and it makes me want to get on the next plane!
For the active traveler looking for adventure, many islands offer activities such as kayaking, hiking and ziplining through the jungle, surfing with playful dolphins and exploring lush tropical forests filled with vibrant flora and fauna. Don’t forget the island’s local culture as an essential part of the experience. Traditional villages, markets and festivals will offer a glimpse into the rich heritage and traditions of the island’s inhabitants.
The island experience culminates in the evenings, where dining on fresh seafood and sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the ocean creates memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or a bit of both, an island getaway offers a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of the natural world. The sea has the same calming effect as meditation. It relaxes mind and body, leaving one feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. According to studies, the sound of the waves calms your soul and the healthy vibe of the island revitalizes your heart and brain. Maybe this is the draw of an island vacation. For newly married couples it could be a chance to disconnect from the world and spend time getting to know each other as they enter a new phase of their lives. Couples who have been together for a while might want to reconnect. For families, it could be spending time participating in activities together, and for solo travelers and singles, a way to meet others who enjoy similar adventures.
From Mykonos to Santorini
Speaking of which, islands like Mykonos are known for their stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, making them popular destinations for singles or solo travelers who want to meet people. Aside from the nightlife, Mykonos has a rich history, with landmarks such as the famous windmills and the church of Paraportiani, which dates back to the 15th century. Mykonos is also known for its charming, narrow streets, lined with colorful houses, shops and cafes. A great party destination but it's also a great location for a romantic getaway. With its stunning scenery, rich history and vibrant culture, Mykonos is a unique and unforgettable destination.
Like Mykonos, Santorini doesn’t need any introduction. However, what many don’t know is that aside from its beautiful, white-washed buildings and stunning views of the sea, this region is also known for its unique wine, made from grapes grown in volcanic soil. Santorini is famous for its stunning sunsets, which are considered among the most beautiful in the world. The sunsets can be viewed from many places on the island, but the most popular spots are Oia, Fira, and the village of Imerovigli. The sunset is especially breathtaking when viewed from a boat in the caldera, which provides a unique perspective of the island's landscape. Historical sites such as the ancient city of Akrotiri should not be missed. It was formed by a volcanic eruption that occurred around 3,600 years ago, which led to the creation of a caldera that is now a popular tourist attraction.
For me, island travel is about nature, sunsets, fine wine and seclusion, so that when I get back to “civilization” I feel re-energized and I can give my full attention to my work, my partner, my family and my goals. For you it might be time with loved ones, for others it might be a way to meet people and party all vacation long.
I am often asked which are my favorite islands and my response is Zanzibar, Bali, Fiji, Bora Bora, the Maldives, Santorini, Mykonos and Ibiza in Spain … I think you can see where this going. I haven’t met an island that I didn’t enjoy, but the ones with less people and more nature are the ones I love most.
