Travel business owners put their lives into their work. The line between business and time outside “work hours” often becomes blurred as you take on new opportunities and try to accommodate your clients’ needs.

Having the flexibility to set your own hours as an independent travel advisor is wonderful … until your drive for success pushes you to do more and help more people. How can you become a better version of yourself while maintaining a healthy balance?

Embrace Change

Self-improvement is simple when you have easy, low-effort steps to take. The challenge comes with the more difficult tasks. One of the obstacles that people struggle with the most is change. Over time, we develop ways of doing things that become the only way or the right way in our minds. But when circumstances throw a curveball in our plans, we must be comfortable with adapting and making the best of the new situation.

Be Transparent About What You Don’t Know

It’s hard to take back a promise. One of the best ways to avoid having to go back on your word is to admit when you don’t know the answer. When a client asks a question and you aren’t sure how to respond, be honest. Then, address how you are going to find the answer. Don’t let your ego prevent you from being authentic about your scope of knowledge.

Understand You Can’t Please Everyone

Try as you might, it’s a fact of life that you cannot please everyone. When vacation expectations aren’t met, clients can get upset. The point of conflict may not be in your control, even if the blame is placed on you. Take a moment to collect yourself and try to let go of what you can’t control. You may find that travel mishaps make clients appreciate the value of your services more.

Be Mindful of the Golden Rule

No one likes long hold times or waiting between email responses. In times of high demand, these are inevitable. It’s easy to become frustrated, especially when the same hold music plays on repeat. Remember that patience and kindness can go a long way. Treat those you are communicating with to the same level of kindness that you want your clients to have with you.

Cultivate Mindfulness

Taking time for yourself is key to your mental health and growth. Whether it’s taking the dog for a walk or reading a book, finding a few quiet moments to center yourself can put you in a better state of mind. If you’re not willing to let go of the responsibilities associated with your business, look for ways to take the pressure off other areas like keeping your house clean or grocery shopping.

When in doubt, lean into your support network. The people around you and your life experiences can help you grow into a better business owner and person.
