In August 2020, ALG Vacations hosted a few lucky travel advisors on familiarization (FAM) trips to Cancun to share what the new world of travel looks like. Here is the story of Amber Sprague Costa, franchise owner for Cruise Planners. Read, share and get inspired to travel again!
How was your airport experience in-destination?
The Cancun Airport was very busy upon arrival, at least three international flights all landed within a few minutes of each other. Three arriving flights made for a very busy immigration area. Everyone was masked, the floor was marked for social distancing but I was very surprised to see the Mexican immigration officers did not have a plexi-glass shield in front of them. Upon exiting the customs area, body temperature scanners were in place.
How was your transfer experience in-destination?
The transfer experience was great. Upon being met by the greeter, we were asked to sanitize our hands. A few minutes later when we boarded the vehicle our hands were sanitized again. I prefer to over-sanitize versus under-sanitize so I had no problem repeating that step.
What resorts did you visit?
Dreams Vista Cancun, El Dorado Royale & Casitas, Royalton & Hideaway at Royalton, Iberostar Selection & Coral Level, Secrets and Dreams Playa Mujeres, Riu Dunamar and Fiesta Americana Condesa.
What is your main takeaway in regards to safety and health from visiting the resort(s)?
The resorts are being held to a much higher standard than everyday life in the U.S. I cannot even count the number of times my temperature was taken and my hands and shoes were sanitized. All employees were wearing masks at all times. Touch points with guests have been limited, but the overall experience has not. Different properties/brands have instilled different protocol, but all of them have the same general idea. I felt like things were very clean and this was a huge priority for every property.
What do you think is the most important thing to share with travelers about your experience?
The travel industry needs travelers now more than ever before. If they are comfortable and ready to travel, the time is now. The employees are overjoyed to have guests back in house, they are thrilled to be make a living again and providing for their families. Rates and resort occupancy are low, cleanliness and friendliness are high, there is no better time than the present to travel.
Would you visit Mexico again this year?
Yes!
