The Vibe

Monterey Beach Hotel effortlessly blends nostalgic charm with modern luxury, creating a coastal chic retreat emphasizing oceanfront relaxation and contemporary elegance. Built in 1967 during the Summer of Love, the hotel has a storied history as a gathering place for artists, musicians and free spirits. Today, it balances that rich legacy with a refined, upscale ambiance brought to life by its thoughtful renovation.

As part of the Marriott Tribute Portfolio Collection, its inviting atmosphere appeals to couples, solo travelers and families. With breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and a timeless sense of place, the hotel captures the enduring spirit of Monterey.

How I Felt

Relaxed. The calming sound of waves crashing outside my window and the hotel's soothing atmosphere allowed me to unwind and destress. I loved how all the rooms opened from an exterior walkway, so you are only steps from the visual and sound of the crashing surf. There is nothing like being lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf outside your window.

The Digs

My room was a sanctuary, blending beachy elegance with a chic coastal vibe. And the views … oh, the views. Neutral tones, large windows framing the ocean's expanse and natural wood accents created a soothing space. The bedding was pillowy, soft and cozy, perfect for unwinding after exploring.

Stylish and functional, it offered ample storage, a spacious vanity and organic bath products crafted by local artisans. A well-stocked minibar ensured snacks and drinks were always at hand. Thoughtful details like a smart TV, charging dock and coffee maker made it feel like home. A sitting area in front of the window provided a perfect nook for relaxation, and I loved being able to adjust the light with the cleverly designed blinds.

All the rooms open from an exterior walkway, offering immediate access to the sound of the ocean and the fresh coastal air. It is easy to step outside and take in the breathtaking scenery whenever you wish.

The Agenda

During my stay, I made the most of the hotel's amenities. The concierge arranged a kayaking trip for us in Elkhorn Slough, a biodiverse wonderland teeming with wildlife and surrounded by scenic wetlands. Another fun activity was riding one of the free e-bikes along the scenic coastal path into Monterey. At the marina, I watched sea lions basking in the sun before wandering along the historic harbor. As I strolled, it felt like John Steinbeck and his iconic Cannery Row were never far from my thoughts, with the area's literary history lingering in the air.

In addition to indulging in the hotel's wine tastings in the lobby lounge, I relaxed by the nightly bonfires on the private beach. The complementary s'mores kit I received at check-in made me feel like a kid again.

The Eats

Dining at The Lantern Room on the hotel's top floor was a real standout during my stay. The floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Monterey Bay provided stunning views, and the nautical decor gave the space a cozy, vintage feel — almost like stepping aboard a classic fishing boat.

Executive Chef Jose Velasquez's passion for using fresh, local ingredients was evident in every bite. We started the evening with incredibly fresh and briny Tofino Inlet Washington oysters. The Crispy Monterey Bay Grenadier fish was a true highlight, showcasing the best local catch. Thoughtfully selected local wines complemented each dish, making the meal even more memorable. Another fantastic dining experience was at Cella Restaurant and Bar, set in the historic Cooper Molera Adobe in Monterey, which dates to 1842. The coastal-inspired menu features fresh, seasonal ingredients. We enjoyed our al fresco meal under a lovely pergola in the garden, covered with vines and twinkling lights.

Why I Would Go Back

My favorite thing was waking up to the sound of waves just steps from my room. I felt so at ease, like I truly belonged there. The private shoreline meant I could wander freely, soaking in the beauty and serenity of Monterey Bay without the usual crowds. What stood out most were the thoughtful details — local wines, ingredients and products that celebrated the area’s heritage and deep connection to its history. It felt less like a hotel and more like a sanctuary. I’d go back in a heartbeat, not just for the coastal adventures but for the rare sense of calm and connection that I found there.
