Sometimes working in the travel industry means traveling a lot for work trips but not taking as many vacations as you’d like. I recently prioritized true vacation time away from the office with my husband and another couple, and we landed on staying at the adults-only, all-inclusive Breathless Cancun Soul Resort & Spa for a four-night getaway.

Cancun is a go-to spot for long weekend trips, especially when you’re flying from an airport that offers Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flights (ENVFs). Upon arrival at the airport in Cancun, Breathless Cancun Soul is only about 25 minutes away, which means you can step into vacation mode pretty quickly after your flight. I’ve attended a few work events at this property in the past, but I was excited to fully immerse myself and explore more of what it has to offer.

The Vibe

Downtown liveliness meets beachfront relaxation at this property. It’s an ideal mix of entertainment in a laidback atmosphere. The location allows for views of both the Caribbean Sea and Nichupte Lagoon. Guests were on the younger side, with 30s and 40s being the most popular age group, but I saw people much older and younger as well. There was a mix of couples and groups of friends traveling together, and I saw a handful of wedding and bachelorette groups while we were there.

It's a vibrant hotel with a lot going on at all times — DJs by the pool, karaoke, Spanish classes, pool volleyball, etc. Those trying to keep up with their fitness routine can do so by visiting the fitness center or joining in on one of the many classes available, including stretching, boot camp and water aerobics.

How I Felt

Welcomed. From the staff at the resort to the other guests on property, everyone we encountered was very kind and welcoming. There was a lot of diversity among guests, and everyone seemed to be having an enjoyable time during their stay. There was a good mix of areas to either engage in activities or relax on your own.

The Digs

We had an Allure Junior Suite Laguna View room, and it was clean and comfortable. I wasn’t able to upgrade, as the resort was just about sold out when I was there, but I would definitely choose a club level room next time for an oceanfront view and hot tub on the balcony. While we did see the ocean from our balcony, our view was mostly parking lots and the lagoon, and we were right above the road which was pretty loud (but that’s to be expected when staying right in Cancun and facing the lagoon).

We did have access to the xhale club’s perks though, some of which included access to an exclusive infinity rooftop pool and the private xhale club lounge, breakfast at Silk City (which has amazing views!) and a hydrotherapy session at the spa. I would say these perks, along with having a nicer room, are well worth paying for the upgraded xhale club offering.

The Agenda

We went into this vacation with no plans, which felt amazing. With two cloudy/rainy days, we ended up in the spa for hydrotherapy one afternoon, which was nice and relaxing. A lot of our time was spent poolside reading, catching up and taking in the stunning views. Other activities included yoga, board games in the lobby, walks and indulging in the delicious restaurants. There are several firepits outside of Coquette, the French restaurant, and Spumante, the Italian restaurant, and sitting next to the fire with a cocktail after dinner was one of my favorite parts of the trip.

The Eats

While there are plenty of fine dining restaurants on property, the first thing that pops into my head when I think back to the eats on this vacation is the fresh sushi that was in the lobby area every evening set up near The Nook Café. This sushi was so fresh and delicious that we stopped by for a few bites every evening whether we were heading to another restaurant or not.

Breathless Cancun Soul has a wide variety of cuisine on offer, from Mexican and seafood to Mediterranean and Pan-Asian. I was very impressed by Spoon, the international buffet, for breakfast and lunch. I am usually not keen on visiting the buffet option at a resort, but this one had delicious food and was very clean. The service at all the eateries was excellent.

Why I Would Go Back

Aside from the lobby sushi? I would come back because the customer service was top-notch. From the staff cleaning the rooms to the entertainment team by the pool to the servers at the restaurants and the employees at the concierge desk, everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. My friends and I commented on this several times throughout our stay. We felt completely taken care of, and we would be happy to spend another vacation at Breathless Cancun Soul.
