Welcome to another edition of Travel Hi Five! Can you believe we are already in November and the holidays are fast approaching? If that is not enough to distract you from building a travel business or your work at hand, then there is lots more out there that might. Our news cycle alone shows that there is a lot going on in the world and in our own backyards that can make the most focused among us want to take a mental break from it all.

Can I be honest with you dear reader? Approaching this month’s edition gave me pause, what could I even talk about when there is more to life than building successful businesses? As you know, I am very focused on bringing you thoughtful ideas to help you be the best travel professional you can be. Just like your business though, life is happening all around us regardless of what we are trying to accomplish. We have had a recent string of news stories that are very concerning around the world and here at home. This is not an opinion piece on any of that, but rather a reflection on how we can best take care of ourselves amidst some of the “chaos.” There is no way the events in the Middle East would not have an impact on travel, culture and, of course, people. Maybe even people close to us.

In past editions I know I have mentioned the concept of finding “harmony” rather than “balance” in our work and personal lives. This month in particular seems a good time to talk about some practical application. Harmony means that there are times we are not going to be at our mental best or focused on business. Harmony also means that we recognize there are times that will happen, and it is OK. Honor the need to focus on something else or do some self-care so that when you know it is time to get back to it in business you are mentally ready to focus again. In today's fast-paced, hyper-connected world, finding a sense of balance and harmony can be a challenge. The constant barrage of news, social media and the many challenges and negativity today can take a toll on our mental well-being. While staying informed is essential, it's equally important to recognize the need for a mental break from the relentless news cycle. As we explore the concept of work-life harmony, keep in mind that consciously taking a step back from the news can be a form of self-care and empowerment. This month I am sharing five brief thoughts to get you thinking about the idea of finding harmony as a form of self-care. By design these are short because right now we all need less, not more.

Recognize the Need For a Mental Break

We live in an age where information is readily accessible, and it seems like it never stops. While staying informed is vital, being constantly plugged in to the news can lead to information overload and a sense of helplessness. The 24-hour news cycle often bombards us with negative stories, sensationalism and divisive rhetoric. This constant exposure can fuel anxiety, stress and despair. As a result, it's essential to recognize when you need a mental break and take deliberate steps to disengage. Have you ever thought to yourself, is there ANY good news out there? Here is a resource that may help you. When you’re looking for something positive you can look to the Good News Network. I am sure you will be able to find something positive there to read about. It also helps you realize there is still lots of good in the world.

Resisting, Not Ignoring Negativity

Negative aspects in society are a reality, and we mustn't ignore them. Social and political issues, economic disparities, environmental concerns and global crises demand our attention. However, the continuous exposure to these issues can lead to a sense of powerlessness and despair, making it challenging to focus on your own well-being. It's important to acknowledge these problems but also to understand that stepping back doesn't mean you're ignoring them; it means you're taking care of your mental health so that you can address them more effectively when needed. On November 1, it was International Stress Awareness Day. Well, any day is a good day to share resources with you on how you can deal with stress, here’s one of my favorites.

Self-Awareness and Mental Health

Work-life harmony begins with self-awareness. Recognizing the signs of mental fatigue, stress and burnout is crucial. It's not a sign of weakness to acknowledge that you need a break; it's a sign of strength and self-care. Just as you wouldn't run a marathon without proper rest and recovery, you can't navigate the challenges of life and society without taking breaks to recharge mentally and emotionally. Your mental health is the foundation of your overall well-being, and it should be a priority. When it comes to being an entrepreneur, they say that without your health, physical or mental, you don’t have a business. Think about that for a moment.

A Conscious Choice For Control

I suggested this earlier, but it is worth repeating, taking a mental break from the news cycle is a conscious choice that allows you to regain a sense of control in your life. While you can't control the events happening in the world, you CAN control how much exposure you have to them. You can choose when and how you consume news. By setting boundaries, you take charge of your mental and emotional well-being. This conscious choice empowers you to focus on the aspects of life that you can control and make a positive impact on.

Reconnecting With the Present

One of the primary benefits of a mental break is the opportunity to reconnect with the present moment. In our digital age, we often find ourselves living in a virtual world, constantly scrolling through news feeds and social media. This can lead to a disconnection from the real world, our relationships and ourselves. By taking a step back, you can immerse yourself in the beauty of the present, savor the little moments and rediscover the joy of face-to-face interactions. This reconnection with the present can lead to a sense of peace, harmony and, dare I say, even some balance in your life.

To wrap up friends, achieving work-life harmony in a world filled with negative news and societal challenges is not about turning a blind eye to the problems, but about recognizing the importance of your mental health and well-being. It's about taking a conscious break from the news cycle to regain control and empower yourself to make a positive impact on the world. By setting boundaries, practicing self-awareness and reconnecting with the present, you can find the harmony you seek to become a more resilient, compassionate and effective individual. Remember that taking a step back from the constant flow of information is not a sign of ignorance; it's an act of self-care and self-preservation. In the wise words of New York Times bestselling author Anne Lamott, "Almost everything will work if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you." So, make the conscious choice to unplug, take a break and restore your work-life harmony for a healthier and happier you. Here is to your personal and professional success!
