Originally operating as Van Loon Shipping since its founding in 1987, this family-owned business found success in its six inland tankers navigating the waters of the Netherlands. However, co-founders Arjan van Loon and Willeke Sturris, along with their children Niels, Bart and Jasmijn, had a passion for sailing these waters and saw the opportunity to share their love with the world. Van Loon Cruises was officially established in 2021, though the brand is looking to make some waves in the American river cruising market this upcoming year. Read on to discover what you need to know about Van Loon Cruises.
The Fleet
The fleet’s first river cruising ship, The Gentleman, is described by Van Loon as ultra-modern with a sporty, yacht-like appearance. The sleek design features 86 passenger cabins in a variety of sizes and styles, with the rooms on the mid and upper decks featuring impressive floor-to-ceiling windows. Onboard, The Gentleman offers a salon, lounge and restaurant.
Van Loon Cruises already has its sights set on expansion with the newest ship, The Nobleman, making its inaugural sailing in March of 2026 on the Rhine. The Nobleman is quite similar to its sister ship in design, though a gym, massage room and sauna have been added as well. Passengers will also find two accessible suites on board, configured to accommodate travelers with mobility concerns.

Ship Details and General Information
Of course, while many river cruising brands offer similar itineraries, the on-board experience greatly differs. Let’s get into some FAQs to help determine if Van Loon Cruises is the best fit for prospective clients.
For Guests
Van Loon does not have a minimum age requirement. Additionally, while the ships may boast a luxurious feel, the dress code over the course of the trip is flexible, ensuring maximum comfort for the passengers.
The advertised pricing covers all onboard meals, including breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner, access to the ship’s amenities and most entertainment. Port excursions are generally an added cost and can be booked separately. Guests also have the option to upgrade their drinks package to include house wines, beer, specialty coffee and soft drinks.
For Advisors
Advisors selling group travel should note that Van Loon requires a minimum of eight staterooms for a discount and can also accommodate a full charter.
Van Loon is planning to offer FAM trips beginning in November of 2025 with the destination yet to be finalized. While guest bookings are open for 2026, Van Loon does not have a booking portal, and all inquiries should be directed to info@vanlooncruises.com.
