The government of Yucatán has increased the entry fee for Chichen Itzá, the ever-popular archaeological zone, from 242 pesos to 480 pesos (an increase from $12.32 to $24.42 in U.S. dollars) for foreign tourists. The price increase went into effect in 2019.
The price change was put in place by local legislature and is causing concern among entrepreneurs of the tourist sector of Yucatán who argue that the price change will result in economic losses and less visitors to the famous site. According to Jamie Solís Garza, president of the Tourism Business Council (CETUR) , 90 percent of visitors to Chichen Itzá are foreign. In addition, almost all Chichen Itzá foreign visitors come to the site from Quintana Roo, meaning the new ticket price may negatively affect both Quintana Roo and Yucatán tour companies.
Despite its status as one of the New Seven Wonders of the world, Solís Garza warns that if this new pricing isn’t reversed, tour operators, travel agents and transportation companies will bring travelers to Tulum which has an entry fee of 75 pesos, which is significantly less than Chichen Itzá.
