As of Aug. 9, Americans who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 for at least 14 days can now travel to Canada.

Canada plans to open its borders to all fully vaccinated travelers on Sept. 9, granted the travelers have been fully vaccinated for 14 days prior to entering Canada and who meet specific entry requirements.

Fully vaccinated travelers must:

  • Provide COVID-19-related information electronically through ArriveCAN (app or web portal) including proof of vaccination prior to arrival in Canada
  • Meet the pre-entry testing requirements
  • Be asymptomatic upon arrival
  • Have a paper or digital copy of their vaccination documentation in English or French (or certified translation) ready to show a government official on request as evidence

Travelers will not have to present a negative test result in order to gain entry into Canada “unless they have been randomly selected to complete a Day 1 COVID-19 molecular test,” according to the statement from the Canadian Government. And they will no longer have to quarantine. Unvaccinated children under the age of 12 and dependents of fully vaccinated travelers are now exempt from quarantining upon arrival, but they cannot participate in group activities including camps or day care centers. Unvaccinated travelers 5 years of age or older must still present proof of a negative COVID-19 test result that was taken within 72 hours of the scheduled departure time of their last direct flight to Canada.

"Canadians' safety and security always come first. With rising vaccination rates and fewer cases in Canada, we can begin to safely ease border measures. A gradual approach to reopening will allow our health authorities to monitor the COVID-19 situation here and abroad. Canadians have worked hard and sacrificed for each other, and because of that work, we can take these next steps safely,” said The Honorable Patty Hajdu, Canada’s Minister of Health.
