Following an eight-month $35 million renovation, Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts announced the reopening of Bahia Principe Luxury Esmeralda in October 2023. First welcoming guests in December 2023, the newly reimaged property now flaunts more dining options, upscale amenities and additional room categories inspired by the indigenous people of the Caribbean, the Taíno, presenting visitors with a fresh and culturally immersive experience.
“In our constant pursuit of excellence, we recognize the importance of investing in the continual enhancement of our hotels, allowing us to align our offerings with the ever-evolving demands of our valued guests,” said Helen Montijano, vice president of sales for Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts. “This recent renovation goes beyond mere space and facility improvements, it is rooted in a profound product conceptualization, deeply connected to the unique essence of the hotel’s location and heritage, paying tribute to an influential culture that has left a mark on the Dominican people.”
Cultural Influence
From the restaurants and hotel lobby to the landscaping and entertainment areas, several spaces throughout Luxury Esmeralda now flaunt a fresh look to highlight the property’s “Taíno Soul” concept. For example, the resort grounds offer a subtle nod to batú, an ancient Taíno game played on a rectangular court enclosed by rocks, through the incorporation of stone elements and natural textures. Further expanding on this thoughtful design are the hotel lobby and buffet areas which symbolize the home of the cacique, the local leader of an indigenous group.

Similarly, Luxury Esmeralda’s living and entertainment spaces are dedicated to the nitaínos — nobility and warriors —, the outdoor areas and theater to the spirit of the bohiques — priests and healers — and the restaurants to the naborías — skilled fishermen, artisans and farmers. Also significant in Taíno culture is the region’s natural landscape, something Bahia Principe seamlessly integrated into this renovation by adding abundant flora throughout the property, naturally attracting vibrant fauna.
An Elevated Guest Experience
Through the combination of functionality, contemporary design and the property’s overall tropical vibe, a stay at Luxury Esmeralda leaves guests of all ages feeling relaxed and refreshed. Further enhancing this already blissful experience is the addition of upgraded room amenities, new room categories and Premium Deluxe swim-up suites. On the restaurant front, the brand is celebrating the addition of its first themed specialty restaurants: Taíno Restaurant, which serves gourmet ancestral flavors, and Restaurant Yurta, an eatery with exceptional Mongolian fare.

“With this remarkable renovation, Bahia Principe Luxury Esmeralda is primed to deliver a revitalized and culturally immersive experience to its guests,” said the brand in an October 2023 press release announcing the property’s reopening. “This grand reopening signifies a significant milestone for both the resort and its visitors, underscoring a commitment to crafting indelible memories and fostering a profound connection with the rich Taíno culture.”
