I take a lot of group trips, whether it be an escorted trip to Europe, a golf getaway or our annual girls getaway to Isle of Palms. Whichever it may be, it seems someone always gets the short end of the stick when it comes to picking up tabs. Not on purpose of course, but it’s very easy to lose track of who you owe what to, especially on longer trips.
On a recent group trip to Alaska, I was introduced to one of the many apps that has become a game changer for my group trips. Splitwise and Splid have also been recommended to me, but I use the Tricount app.
After downloading the Tricount app, you can start and name a new group and then share with anyone that will be traveling with you. Throughout the trip, anytime someone makes a purchase that includes others, they can go to the app and in less than 30 seconds enter the amount, what it was for and who it was for.
For example, we just had 10 girls on our latest trip to Isle of Palms, and five of us went out after dinner. I paid the bill and entered the amount and clicked on the four others that were with me. At the end of the trip, you click on the balances, and it averages everything out to make the least amount of transactions and lets you know who to pay.
So instead of 30 different Venmos you are sending to each other throughout the trip, it is one easy transaction at the end. Math is not my strong suit so I don’t pretend to understand how it all works out; I just know we only had to make a Venmo/PayPal transaction at the end, and it saved me a big headache trying to remember who I owed what to. We all agreed it is a genius app that we will never travel as a group without!
