From the thrashing sounds of heavy metal to the techno beats of today’s hits, it’s no secret that most people have an appreciation for this auditory art form, regardless of what type of music is on their playlist. However, favorite songs and catchy tunes don’t have to stay confined to the limited capabilities of headphones and speakers.
A music lover’s paradise, these seven domestic concert venues are a great way to listen to a variety of artists while immersed in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. Ranging from modern to rustic and located all over the map, these venues are sure to take travelers on an adventure to remember.
Red Rocks Amphitheatre – Colorado
An obvious classic, Red Rocks is known for its jaw-dropping scenery. This gorgeous outdoor amphitheater was built into a — you guessed it — red rock structure 6,450 feet above sea level. Located only 10 miles away from Denver, visitors can witness the striking contrast of the distant city skyline and the surrounding mountainous terrain while listening to their favorite music. Red Rocks has a capacity of just under 10,000 people, so there are plenty of seating options for all types of travelers.
Jay Pritzker Pavilion – Illinois
Perhaps not a traveler’s first pick when choosing a domestic destination, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion more than makes up for what seems to be never-ending cornfields in the rest of Illinois. Found in the heart of Chicago, the modern structure of the pavilion truly resembles the innovative nature of the city. A steel “headdress” sits atop the venue with billowing metal ribbons framing the stage and connecting to various other crisscrossing pipes.
The first of its kind in the world, Jay Pritzker Pavilion features a state-of-the-art sound system with acoustics to rival that of an indoor concert hall. This advanced technology proves to be useful as the pavilion has a capacity of 14,000 people with only 4,000 actual fixed seats. The expansive lawn space surrounding the venue accounts for the rest of the seating, so this sound system ensures that all visitors get to experience the show with the same sharp clarity.
Hearst Greek Theatre – California
Another fan favorite, the William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre is located on the UC Berkeley campus with noteworthy views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge and Mount Tamalpais. Drawing inspiration from the Greek theater of Epidaurus, the venue features artfully crafted columns and ornate engravings which is sure to impress any visitor. A slightly smaller amphitheater, this venue seats 8,500 people.
Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena – Nevada
A true hidden gem, the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena will be sure to leave travelers speechless with the sprawling mountain ranges and glistening waters of Lake Tahoe bordering the venue. Located in Stateline, Nevada — a town with less than 1,000 residents — the outdoor arena is the epitome of off-the-beaten-path. While it may fly under the radar, the venue has a capacity of 9,300 people for standing room only shows. The arena also offers ADA-approved seating accommodations, ensuring that all travelers can rock out to their favorite bands.
Cumberland Caverns – Tennessee
Caves and concerts — an unexpected pairing, but one that exists nonetheless! Located in McMinnville, Tennessee, the Cumberland Caverns is a sheltered venue, perfect for visitors looking to check out this show cave at any time of the year. Be warned, though, as this venue is in a cave, seating is limited. The caverns can accommodate 850 people in padded chairs or up to 1,200 people for standing room only.
Alpine Valley Music Theater – Wisconsin
There’s more to Wisconsin than beer, cheese and the Packers? While all those things are certainly important, East Troy is home to one of the biggest outdoor amphitheaters in the United States. Alpine Valley Music Theater holds a whopping 37,000 people with a large majority of seating available on the rolling lawn space. The venue is nestled into stunning greenery and features a characteristic wooden roof over the pavilion that complements this rustic landscape well.
Jones Beach Theater – New York
Distinct from the towering skyscrapers and hustle and bustle of the Big Apple that are frequently associated with New York, the Jones Beach Theater is the perfect outdoor venue for travelers looking to vibe out on the water. Located in Wantagh, the stage borders the beaches of Zach’s Bay, and visitors get to overlook it as the gentle waves of the Atlantic Ocean roll in. A rather large venue, Jones Beach Theater seats 15,000 and is considered family friendly.
